Description
The Farriers is a cottage that may have origins in the 16th century, with some evidence suggesting a 17th-century plan, although most of the current structure dates from the 19th or 20th century. It is built from rendered cob or rubble and features a thatched roof. The building is a broad block that runs parallel to the street and was originally designed with two or three rooms and a cross passage, along with a long back wing that was added in the 18th or early 19th century.
The cottage has two storeys. On the ground floor, there is a 20th-century door beneath a thatched hood on the left, followed by a two-light and a single casement window. To the right, there is a thatched quadrant added in the mid-20th century, and a three-light window in a slated lean-to that extends to the street edge. The first floor features a two-light window and a single light window. The building has large, stepped gable stacks.
The long back wing also has two storeys and contains various two-light glazing-bar casements with wooden lintels, as well as two eyebrow windows. There is a notable 19th-century door with a peaked head. Inside the main block, there is a stone spiral staircase to the left of the entry, a deep chamfered and stopped beam, and a stone overmantel with a chamfered edge. The end room on the right has a new bressumer fireplace and a blind opening to the former back wall. The top right bedroom features a blocked gable window. The roof structure has not been inspected.
A photograph in the Kingston History Society booklet from 1980 shows a central door and different window arrangements, indicating that the quadrant had not yet been added at that time. The Farriers is a fine building that holds an important visual position within the settlement.
