Description

Butter Well is a 19th-century structure located in Kingston Village Centre. It is built of rubble and features a small domed square enclosure that is partly below ground level. Adjacent to the street is a large round buttress, and there is a small curb wall leading to a 20th-century driveway. Stone steps descend to an opening that has a wooden slatted gate, leading into a limewashed interior. Inside, there is a square sunken well containing fresh water and a single slate shelf. This type of well is sometimes found within buildings in the area, and this particular example appears to have been retained for the general use of local villagers. Along with the nearby donkey stable, this well serves as an interesting reminder of the village's earlier life.
