Description

KINGSTON VILLAGE CENTRE SX 64 NW 4/42 Butter well opposite Robins Cottage

GV II

Butter well. C19. Rubble. A small domed square enclosure, partly below ground, with a large round buttress adjacent to the street, and a small curb Wall to a C20 driveway. Stone steps lead down to an opening with wood slatted gate to a limewashed interior having a square sunken well with fresh water and a single slate shelf. These wells sometimes occur within buildings in the area; this example is a well retained version, possibly for general use of the villa- gers. With the donkey stable (qv) just to the north in the same street, this is an interesting reminder of the earlier life of the village.
