Description
Lower Velwell is a farmhouse that dates from the 17th century, with a 19th century addition at the rear. It is constructed from rendered stone rubble and features a slate roof with gabled ends. The building has a three-room layout with a through passage, which has been blocked at the rear by stairs. It stands two storeys high and has a four-window range, including 19th and 20th century casements, as well as two early 19th century three-light casements with leaded panes. The doorway is located to the left of center and has a flush panel door with a 20th century hood above it. The farmhouse has rendered ridge and end chimney stacks, along with a later gabled wing and outshut at the rear. A datestone on the stack at the southwest gable end is inscribed with "Mover W S, 1731 or 1737." There is also a mounting block on the front wall. Inside, there is a plank and muntin partition at the northeast end between the hall and parlour, along with roughly-hewn ceiling beams. The central fireplace features a rough stone lintel, and much of the roof structure has been replaced.
