Description
Westcombe Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early to mid 17th century, with later 19th-century alterations and additions. It is constructed of local slate stone rubble, with the left side of the porch slate hung. The roof is slate, with gabled ends; an early ear slope is made of asbestos slates, and original crested ridge tiles remain over the porch. A rendered gable end stack is located to the right, featuring dripcourses and tapered caps. Two projecting rear lateral stacks, with set-offs, are also present.
The original plan comprised a three-room layout; two principal rooms of equal size, each with a rear lateral stack, and a wide stair hall between. A two-storey porch is situated to the left of the centre. The third, smaller room at the right end served as the kitchen and has a gable end stack. An integral outshut originally existed behind the right-hand end, likely housing a dairy, though this appears to have been raised or rebuilt in the 19th century. The stair hall was also extended at the rear to accommodate a 19th-century staircase.
The exterior presents an asymmetrical but regular four-window front. The first floor has early 19th-century three-light and two-light casements, and a two-light casement in the porch. The ground floor features large 19th-century casements; to the left are two-lights with 19th-century hoodmoulds, to the centre right a four-light opening within a cambered arch, and to the right a three-light window, all with glazing bars. The porch has an unchamfered wooden lintel over a 20th-century outer door. The inner doorway retains the original 17th-century wooden doorframe with a double ovolo moulding, where the stops are worn. A nail-studded plank door with wrought iron hinges is also original. The porch has a slate floor and external stone steps, with a slate stepped mounting block attached to the right.
The rear elevation features integrally gabled rear lateral stacks that rise from the main roof. Between the stacks is a flat-roofed stairwell holding a 19th-century round arched stair window with margin glazing bars, which may be a remodelling of the original. A hipped roof slate hung short wing and a small, slate hung two-storey addition are located to the left behind the left stack. A single-storey dairy addition is attached to the left, with a hipped roof.
Inside, a timber plank and muntin screen separates the stair hall from the right-hand room. The screen features wide planks and ovolo moulded muntins. A Victorian staircase is positioned at the rear of the stair hall, with an open string, elaborate newel, turned balusters, and a wreathed hand rail. Both the right and left rooms have 20th-century chimney pieces. 18th- and 19th-century joinery is present, including fielded four-panel doors, two-panel doors, and a panelled cupboard in the left-hand room, now partly glazed. The ceiling beams in the right and left rooms are boxed in, and the kitchen at the right end has a chamfered cross-beam. The roof structure appears to be the original 17th-century pegged design. The site is level, having been formed by excavating the rock behind the house.
