Description

This is a farm building located immediately south of Lower Allerton Farmhouse, likely originating from the 16th century with later alterations. It is constructed from local limestone rubble and some cob, topped with a corrugated asbestos roof featuring gabled ends. The building is small, single-storey, and consists of a single cell built into a bank at the rear. The lower level at the front has stone steps leading to a wide doorway on the right, which features a 16th-century chamfered wooden doorframe with a shouldered head. On the left side of the front, there is a stone rubble lean-to added in the late 19th century. At the rear, there is a ventilation slit secured with an iron stanchion bar, and this section of the wall appears to block a former opening. Inside, there is a 20th-century roof structure, and the rear wall has a slight projection, but there is no evidence of a fireplace. The interior walls are partly plastered.
