Description
The Secondary House at Plas Heaton Farm is a two-storey building constructed from limestone rubble, with remnants of limewash on the rear side. It features a medium-pitched slate roof with crow-stepped gables at both ends, which have slate copings and formerly had ball finials. On the left gable, there is a squat chimney, and below it, a later semi-circular oven projection from the early 19th century, which is also slated.
The side facing the farmyard has two entrances with boarded doors, along with a reduced former entrance that has been replaced by a modern three-light window. To the right of this, there is a small light that is essentially original but has undergone some alteration. A blocked opening is also present, with a modern steel-framed window beyond it. The attic features two 20th-century gabled dormers with plain wooden casement windows, and there is a boarded loading bay to the right with a small, reduced primary light tucked under the eaves.
The rear side of the building retains evidence of all its original openings. The upper floor has a blocked window on the left and a partly-reduced three-light wooden mullioned window to the right of center. The ground floor contains three blocked windows, each originally featuring three mullions, with expressed timber lintels and pegged frames. To the far right, there is a partly-blocked five-light mullioned and transomed wooden window with a similar frame and lintel, showcasing offset mullions. A boarded entrance is located at the south gable end, with a flight of stone steps leading to a first-floor boarded entrance in a pegged frame. Additionally, there is a 19th-century brick and rubble lean-to that is flush with the front.
Inside, the ground floor features a large fireplace with a flat, stopped-chamfered bressummer in the left (north) room, along with stopped-chamfered ceiling beams and an old ladder stair to the left of the fireplace. Evidence of mortising on a lateral beam indicates that there was once a post-and-panel partition, with a modern brick wall immediately beyond. The rest of the ground floor has its ceiling beams obscured, and there is a modern brick supporting pillar in the central room. The roof is a four-bay part-open design with original pegged collar and raking strut trusses, and a former partition truss is visible at the north end.
