Description

The C-shaped agricultural complex at Plas Heaton is constructed from limestone rubble and features slated roofs. The overall design follows a C-plan. It includes a main 11-bay barn range, which is joined at right angles to the southwest by an early 19th-century 5-bay hay barn. A contemporary single-storey byre range runs parallel to the barn, creating a quadrangular yard that is covered by a modern steel and timber roof.

The barn section showcases coped and kneelered gable parapets, with a ball finial at the apex facing the house. There are large off-centre entrances on the long sides, with the entrance facing the main farmyard featuring a segmental arch. To the right of this entrance is a round-headed opening, along with a further blocked opening beyond. A boarded door is located at the far right, which has an exposed timber lintel. The barn has two tiers of ventilators, some of which are blocked, and three tiers on the gable ends. The inner side has various modern openings, including some with steel-framed windows, as well as three upper loading bays that have exposed lintels and 6-pane glazing. A modern corrugated iron lean-to covers much of the farmyard-facing side.

The hay barn has open sides supported by tall piers, with some sections of the lower bays blocked. It features pegged queen strut trusses, and the end gable has plain arched openings that are symmetrically arranged. The byre section includes four regularly spaced entrances on the inner side, which are boarded and gated, with ventilators in between. There are additional ventilators at the rear, along with a near-central segmentally-arched entrance.

The primary barn range consists of eleven bays with pegged tie beam trusses that have raking struts and collars. The four northeast bays are open to the roof, while the remaining bays contain a loft. The open bays are supported by tall posts that hold up the two end trusses.
