Description

Plas Heaton Farm is a T-shaped house dating from the 17th century, featuring one-and-a-half storeys. It is constructed from limestone rubble and partly brick, with pebble-dashed principal elevations and slate roofs that have slab-coped gable parapets with curved kneelers. The house has a central brick chimney that was heightened in the early 20th century, along with a projecting gabled end chimney at the rear arm, which has a reduced brown sandstone stack.

The south-facing front, which overlooks the yard, has three 12-pane unhorned sash windows on each floor. The upper windows break the eaves and are set within hipped dormers. There is a similar ground-floor window on the right gable end. The left gable end features a projecting brick gabled chimney with a modern top section, which partially covers an earlier window from the 16th or 17th century that is now blocked and has a pegged oak frame.

The rear wing includes a 19th-century outshut on its west side, featuring a modern stable-type door and a small-pane modern window to the left, along with a tall brick chimney at the corner. The corresponding eastern side has a single-storey early 20th-century porch at the corner, with a part-glazed contemporary door. There is a modern multi-pane wooden window on the ground floor to the right, with a 12-pane dormered sash window above, similar to the others, and a 12-pane fixed window to the left.

In the angle between the wings is a 17th-century well stair, which has flat pierced balusters and a geometric pattern of conjoined ovals and rectangles on the string. The square newels feature S-shaped relief carving. An ex-situ wooden plaque affixed to the stair reads: HIM:AN:DO:1680, indicating its connection to Heaton. It is likely that this staircase, which probably dates from the second quarter or mid-17th century, was updated and simplified around 1680 when the house was remodelled. There is also a two-panel fielded cupboard door, likely from the mid-18th century.
