Description

Cuming Farmhouse, which includes an attached stable with a loft above, likely dates from the early 18th century. The building is constructed of whitewashed stone rubble and features a slate roof with half-hipped ends. It has a three-room layout with a wide through passage and stairs located between the hall and the lower rooms. The hall and lower room have lateral stacks on the rear wall, with the lower room's stack now enclosed in a rear outshut. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a four-window range, featuring two and three-light 19th-century casements with glazing bars and slate sills, while the ground floor has segmental brick arches. There is a plank door to the right of the center, topped with a 19th-century gabled hood.

The farmhouse is positioned at right angles to the road, with adjoining stables at the lower north end. These stables are also made of whitewashed stone rubble, have a slate half-hipped roof, and feature external stairs leading to a loft door at the front, along with a stable door at the road end and blocked pigeon or ventilation holes above.

Inside, the hall has a square-section timber lintel above an open lateral fireplace. The inner room contains a chamfered ceiling beam with straight stops, while the lower room has a small fireplace associated with the central stack. The straight-framed staircase is located in the wider through passage. The rooms were likely originally ceiled, and the chamfered ceiling beam in the inner room may have been reused. The roof trusses include side-pegged lap-jointed collars and apices.
