Description
The Kingston War Memorial is located in the churchyard of St James the Less church, near the back gate. It stands approximately 5 meters tall and is constructed of granite. The memorial features a plain Latin cross on a tapering square shaft, which rises from a small pedestal that sits on a tapering plinth. The plinth is supported by a two-stepped, octagonal base.
The front face of the pedestal is inscribed with "TO OUR GLORIOUS DEAD" along with the names, regiments or ships, and dates of death of those who fell in the First World War, which are listed on the plinth below. An inscription on the uppermost step of the base reads "KINGSTON’S MEMORIAL TO HER SONS WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918. GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS." The rear of the plinth includes an inscription for the Second World War, stating "SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-1945" followed by seven names, and "1956 MALAYA" with one name. All inscriptions are made with applied metal lettering painted black.
The memorial is enclosed by a small, square stone kerbed area that is surfaced with gravel.
