Description
Cholwich Farmhouse is a farmhouse that was formerly a manor house, dating from around the 16th century, with possible earlier origins. It is constructed of rendered granite rubble with granite dressings and features a low-pitched slate roof with gabled and hipped ends. The building is L-shaped in plan, with gables facing north-east and south-west, and has two storeys with asymmetrical fenestration. The south-west gable includes a depressed arch granite doorway and a window, both adorned with roll mouldings. The granite hollow-chamfered window frames, some of which retain their mullions, are notable features. There is a three-light window on the ground floor of the north wing, accompanied by a chamfered depressed arch doorway on the side. A similar doorway is found on the opposite wall, enclosing a yard to the north. The east gable end has a large granite chimney stack with set-offs. An adjoining outbuilding to the north-west features a blocked depressed arch doorway leading to the yard and hollow-chamfered window frames, with its roof clad in corrugated iron. Inside, the farmhouse boasts ceiling beams and open fireplaces, along with moulded wood doorways and old rail-studded doors. The Cholwich family settled in this area in the early 13th century, remaining until the last of the family passed away in 1835.
