Description

Okenbury Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates back to the 17th century, with some later modifications. It is built of rubble, with some areas rendered and some covered in slate, topped by slate roofs. The building features a long gabled wing that runs across the slope from northeast to southwest, with a hipped wing extending forward from the lower end. This hipped wing has a large external stack on its southern wall. There is a cross passage near the internal angle of the main block.

The farmhouse has two storeys. On the entrance side, the main block has two small 2-light casement windows on the first floor and a door located near the re-entrant. The projecting wing features 20th-century steel windows on both levels at the hipped end, along with a small 2-light window beyond the stack on the return. The ridge of the projecting wing is slightly lower than that of the main block. The lower gable end and return front of the long block are slate hung at the first floor and have four 16-pane sash windows, while the lower fenestration is not visible. The gable end includes a 2-light casement above a door that is raised above the adjacent ground level.

There are two large ridge stacks, which may have originally been at the gables but have since been extended at either end. Inside, the farmhouse reportedly contains exposed ceiling beams, a blocked arched fireplace, a late Georgian staircase, and a kitchen featuring two hearths and two butter-wells, which are typical for this region. The low pitch of the roof suggests that the roof structures were altered in the 19th century. Okenbury was previously part of the Ringmore Civil Parish.
