Description
The Yealmpton War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of Cornish granite and is located prominently at the northern edge of St Bartholomew's churchyard, facing Fore Street.
To accommodate the memorial, part of the churchyard wall has been removed, creating a three-sided, stone-walled, open-fronted enclosure with a paved area.
The memorial features a simple wheel-head cross made of Cornish granite, which is positioned on a tapering plinth and a three-stepped base. The main inscription, crafted in leaded lettering, is located on the front (northern) face of the plinth and reads: "TO THE HONOURED MEMORY OF THE/ MEN OF THE PARISH WHO LAID DOWN/ THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR KING AND COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918/ (18 NAMES IN TWO COLUMNS)."
Additionally, the front face of the upper step of the base includes another inscription: "ALSO IN THE WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945/ (11 NAMES IN THREE COLUMNS)."
