Description
Kirkbampton War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, located in the churchyard of St Peter’s Church on the B5307 in Kirkbampton, Cumbria. It is prominently positioned in the north-west corner of the churchyard, facing the main road and next to the churchyard entrance. The memorial features a approximately 2.5-meter high wheel-head cross made of Cornish granite, adorned with Celtic knot work on the front. This cross stands on a wide, tapering shaft that is supported by a four-sided plinth. Both the shaft and the plinth display inscriptions in incised and blacked lettering. The main inscription reads: "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 (NAMES) AND IN THE WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945 (NAMES) 'WHO STANDS IF FREEDOM FALL' 'WHO DIES IF ENGLAND LIVE'."
