Description
This building is a barn with stables adjoining, located 15 metres south of West Hildrew Farmhouse. The barn dates from the 17th century, while the stables were built in the late 18th century or early 19th century. It is constructed of unrendered stone and cob, topped with a corrugated iron roof that has a gable end on the left side. The barn is rectangular in shape, consisting of six bays, with an additional lofted bay at the left end and the stables attached to the right end.
The barn features opposing doors, with double doors at the rear and a single doorway on the front yard side. This front doorway has a 17th-century chamfered surround and is flanked by buttresses. The lofted bay has a 17th-century doorway, one of the jambs of which has been replaced, and it includes ladder access to the loft. On the left gable end, there are three-light timber mullion windows with diagonally set timber stanchions between them.
The stables on the right side have a loft door with four pigeon holes above it, flanked by shuttered square window openings. Inside the barn, there are five 17th-century trusses featuring straight principals, morticed and tenoned slightly cambered collars, and trenched purlins.
