Description
Speedwell House is a farmhouse with an adjoining outbuilding, now used as a house and garage with a loft above. The house has origins dating back to the 16th century, possibly earlier, and was refenestrated in the 19th century, around the same time the outbuilding was likely added. The house is constructed of rubble with some cob and is finished with whitewashed roughcast render. It features a wheat-reed thatch roof with gable ends and has brick stacks at each gable and an axial rubble stack.
The house has a three-cell plan, although the upper end appears to be a late 18th or 19th-century addition. The original dwelling was probably an open hall, with a floor inserted in the late 16th century. The outbuilding, made of rubble, has a lower ridge and is roofed in corrugated iron. The structure is two storeys high and has a five-window range of two-light casements, each with two panes. There is an off-centre 20th-century door, a two-light window to the left with two panes per light, and a French window along with a two-light casement to the right, each with three panes per light.
Inside, a pair of raised crucks set low over the hall suggests that it may have originally been open to the roof, though there is no access to the roof space except for a separate loft at the upper end, which has two trusses likely from the 19th century. The outbuilding features a round-arched window above the garage doors at the gable end and a raised loft door under a raking dormer at the rear.
