Description

The row of three cottages, originally four, dates to the 18th century, with an extension added to the left end in the 19th century. The construction is of rendered rubble and cob, with a continuous thatched roof. The roof has gable ends to the main range, and four brick stacks to the rear; the two right-hand stacks have been rebuilt with breeze blocks and are enclosed within outshuts with corrugated iron roofs to the right and a slated roof to the left. The left-hand extension is two storeys high, while the rest of the cottages are single-storey. The left extension has a pantiled roof to the front and a slated catslide roof to the rear, with a brick stack to the left gable end.

The cottages have a single-room depth, with the thatched range forming a continuous row and the left-hand extension set forward slightly. The thatched range has an eight-window front of mainly 19th-century 2-light casements, with three windows replaced with metal casements towards the left end. The ground floor of the left extension has a 2-light casement with four panes to each light on the left side, and two 20th-century metal casements to the right of a half-glazed panelled door with a gabled canopy. Clare Cottage contains sash windows with single panes and marginal glazing bars to each sash to the right of a plank door with a gabled canopy. Single-light windows flank a 2-light casement and a stable door with a gabled canopy at Skirr Cottage, which is the right-hand cottage. The left-hand extension has two sashes with marginal glazing bars above a large sash with a 2-light casement to the left and a half-glazed panelled wooden canopy. Skirr Cottage was formerly the residence of Henry Williamson, the author of Tarka the Otter.
