Description

This is an early 19th-century house, later subdivided and extended, located on South Street in Barnstaple. The building has rendered walls with horizontal channelling, and a slate roof. There are red brick chimneys on each end wall of the original front range, and another on the rear wing to the right.

The front range (number 35A) is double-fronted with an extension (number 35) to the right. Behind number 35A are two short, adjacent projections, one of which likely housed a staircase. A long 19th-century wing now forms part of number 35.

The front of the building has a three-window range with a one-window extension to the right. The central doorway of the front range features a three-panel door with a lion-head knocker and glazed top panels, topped by a flat, moulded hood supported on consoles. Ground floor windows have six-pane sashes in concealed frames; those on the first floor have eight-pane sashes in box frames. The windows in both storeys have voussoirs marked out in the cement render. A boxed eaves cornice runs along the top of the front elevation.

The house to the right has a bow window on the ground floor, and two small-paned wooden casement windows above. The long rear wing has two pointed-arched upper-storey windows on its left side (facing south), each with two wooden pointed-arched lights and eight-paned casements in the lower part. The gable end of the rear wing has a segmental-headed upper-storey window with eight-paned sashes, but no window on the ground floor.

A right rear projection at number 35A has a window with six-paned sashes in the upper storey. A projection to the left has an upper-storey sash window with margin panes. The rear and sides of the building are visible from Eddys Lane. The interior has not been inspected, but ground-floor front windows of the original building have panelled shutters.
