Description
No. 11 Joy Street is a shop built in 1896 by A Lauder for the Barnstaple Co-operative Society. The front is made of limestone ashlar with bands of brown stone, while the rest of the building is constructed from red brick. The roof is not visible from the street, and there is a red brick chimney on the left gable. The building is designed in a late medieval French Gothic style and has two lofty storeys, which are equivalent to three storeys of the neighboring buildings.
The front features four bays, with a 20th-century shop front on the ground storey, except for the original doorway at the left-hand end. This doorway has a moulded segmental arch with a section of entablature above it. To the left of the doorway is a triangular pilaster with a carved capital. The upper storey displays a series of round-arched windows with heavily moulded archivolts that spring from triangular pilasters with attached shafts on either side. At the base of the right-hand pilaster and each of the two left-hand pilasters, there is a griffin holding a shield. Above each window, there is a gabled hood that contains a cartouche flanked by cherubs, with the feet of the hoods decorated with winged beasts. Behind these hoods is a tall panelled parapet topped with more griffins holding shields. The interior has not been inspected.
