Description
9 and 10 Joy Street is a house and shop built in 1862 by builders Horne and Oliver. The building features solid rendered walls, likely made of brick, and has slated roofs that are hipped at the splayed corner with Market Street. The right rear wing, which is visible from Market Street, also has a hipped roof at the back and a rendered chimney against the gable wall. The layout includes a long front range that is two rooms deep, with a short rear wing on the right that faces Market Street, and a longer rear wing on the left of uncertain date.
The building stands three storeys tall and has a three-window range on Joy Street, along with a three-window return on Market Street. The splayed corner is slightly recessed and does not have windows. The ground storey features 20th-century shop fronts, except for a short section of rusticated stucco at the rear end of the Market Street front. The upper-storey windows have eared architraves that are swept outwards at the front. The sash windows each have one upright glazing bar in the centre. On Market Street, the right-hand window of each storey consists of three lights, with the wider middle sashes having the single glazing bar. Each three-light window has a small window to its left, which is blocked on the third storey and may have been added later. Both facades have rusticated quoins, and the third-storey windows feature bracketed cills set on a small entablature decorated with scrollwork. The top entablature has a pulvinated frieze and a modillioned cornice that supports the eaves.
The windows in the rear wall and left rear wing are plain and date from the late 20th century. The interior has not been inspected but is noted to have moulded cornices and plasterwork on the first floor.
