Description

No. 13 High Street is a shop built in the late 19th century, likely designed by W.C. Oliver of Barnstaple. The building features a limestone front with bands of brown stone, and decorative details in marble and terracotta. The top storey is constructed of red and cream brick with a wooden structure in front. It has a leaded roof and a chimney made of red and cream brick, topped with a crenellated stone cap on the right-hand side wall.

The building stands four storeys high and has a four-window range, with two side windows facing Church Lane. The ground storey has a late 20th-century shop front. The second storey features a continuous row of stone mullioned windows, each with two transom lights above that contain coloured glass. A carved string course runs at the first-floor level. The third storey also has a continuous row of windows with carved segmental arches, which spring from marble columns resting on a continued moulded cill; limestone columns are used for the windows facing Church Lane. The windows are fitted with sashes that have margin and transom panes of coloured glass.

The fronts of the building are flanked by giant pilasters with bands of brown stone. At the top of each pilaster, there is a pair of consoles that support a section of entablature topped with a round-headed finial. A cornice runs between the pilasters, supported by moulded brackets. The fourth storey features a canted bay window set back behind a balustraded wooden gallery, which has moulded columns supporting a deep entablature that includes a panelled frieze and a triangular pediment over the centre. The interior has not been inspected.
