Description

No. 98 High Street is a shop with accommodation above, dating from the 17th century, with later modifications in the 18th century and late 20th century. The building is constructed of painted brick, and its roof is concealed behind a parapet. Originally, it had a deep plan and was two rooms wide. The ground floor has been gutted for shop use but retains sections of plaster ceiling from the former rear rooms on both sides.

The building has three storeys and features a symmetrical three-bay front from the early 19th century. It has a deep projecting moulded eaves cornice with a dentil frieze and a parapet. The modern shop front includes plate-glass windows that are angled towards the door. To the left, there are remnants of a 19th-century pilaster with a large timber bracket, and the remains of a moulded cornice can be seen above the modern fascia. There are three first-floor and three second-floor windows, each with moulded architraves and fitted with two-pane sashes.

Inside, the ground floor retains two different decorated plaster ceilings, which are exposed through holes cut in the modern suspended ceiling. A fireplace on the rear left wall is largely concealed by modern shop fittings. The first floor has not been inspected but is reported to have an incomplete early 17th-century ribbed ceiling with a large pendant.
