Description
Pill House is a large house, built around 1700, possibly with an earlier core, and is currently divided into flats. It is constructed of plastered stone rubble and has a slate roof with lead rolls, hipped at the ends, and stacks with old brick shafts. The main range features an entrance that is asymmetrically placed, indicating the possibility of an earlier core, while the rear right wing may have served as a service wing containing the kitchen.
The house is two storeys high with an attic and has deep eaves with an eaves board, as well as a platband at the first floor level. The front elevation is slightly asymmetrical but regularly features seven windows. The main entrance is located to the left of the center and includes a pilastered doorcase with fluted pilasters and a six-panel door with fielded panels. Above the entrance is a semicircular porch hood supported by carved, scrolled brackets. The front has twelve-pane sash windows without horns, except for the two ground-floor windows to the right of the entrance, which have six over nine panes. There are four attic windows, likely from around 1700, featuring pedimented gables and slate-hung sides, glazed with two-light casements that have eight panes per light. The right side of the house has a slate-roofed single-storey lean-to across the front.
The interior has been partially inspected and includes a stick baluster stair from around 1830, with the stair hall retaining some moulded plaster cornice. Other features of interest may be present elsewhere in the building.
