Description
A pair of early 19th-century houses forming part of a terrace of five, situated on South Street in Newport, Barnstaple. The houses have solid rendered fronts and slated roofs with three red brick chimneys on the ridge. They are two storeys high, with No.1 having a semi-basement at the left-hand end. Each house originally had a two-window range, with a doorway to the left, although No.1 includes a one-window projection to the left, likely a later addition. The doorway of No.1 features Ionic pilasters and an entablature with a modillioned cornice, adorned with an eight-panelled door and knocker. A ground-floor window to the right of No.1 has four-paned box-framed sashes, while the other ground and upper-floor windows retain barred sashes with margin panes; these are six over six panes in the main body of the house and four over four in the projection. The semi-basement window of the projection also has six over six panes and margin panes. Stepped boards run below the eaves, with cornices on paired brackets added to those on the projection. The door, doorcase, and windows of No.2 have been replaced in the late 20th century with inaccurate Georgian-style plastic. A plain eaves board of a similar date has also been installed. The interior was not inspected. The property is included on the list for group value.
