Description

WESTLEIGH WESTLEIGH SS 42 NE 3/139 Pair of gravestones to head and foot of grave of George Saunders approximately 13 metres south- west of south-west corner of west Tower of Church of St Peter GV II Pair of gravestones. 1745. Slate. Segmental arch headed. Headstone has incised representation of angel blowing trumpet above inscription recording death of George Saunders in 1745. Stone at foot of grave has skull and cross-bones flanking pierced heart with verse: 'When Boarex blew great Neptunes waves Did toss me to and fro But now Anchor here does lye with many more below. Altho' at Anchor Here I lye with many of our fleet I shall one day set sail again my Savior Christ to meet Then cease to mourn my wife most dear Who was to me most kind And you also my tender child Tho' you are left behind.'
