Description

This is a group of eight chest tombs located in the area defined by paths in the north-west corner of the churchyard of St. Peter. The tombs are made of stone and include four in the north-west corner that share a similar style. These are for Josiah Saunders who died in 1847, Rev. Josiah Saunders who died in 1791, William Hill who died in 1776, and George Swift who died in 1811. All four tombs are of the same size and feature inset banded angle pilasters, alternating fleuron and fluted bands on the frieze, and a moulded top.

Closer to the church tower are the tomb of Mary Shaw who died in 1787 and the Hulme Memorial, which dates from 1717 but is more closely associated with the 1787 date referring to Elizabeth Hulme. Mary Shaw's tomb has moulded pilasters at the angles, while the Hulme Memorial has reeded pilasters at the angles and an unusual Neoclassical surbase crest. Additionally, there is a tomb for Thomas Bentley who died in 1822, which features reeded pilasters at the centre and angles.
