Description

Paynes Cottages are paired cottages located in Filleigh, likely built in the mid-19th century, although they may be older. They are constructed from cob and stone, rendered, and topped with a thatched roof featuring gable ends. The cottages have two bays with rear wings, and the entrances are located in the outer bays, with an additional bay to the left that is presumably a later addition. The buildings are two storeys tall, and all windows are small paned timber casements. The roof extends forward and down to create rustic porches. No. 1 remains unaltered, supported by timber, and has a plain 19th-century door that is partially glazed. No. 2 has had 20th-century infill, including a door and window, and features a hipped roof to the left over the additional bay and a half-hipped roof to the right. There is a central shared brick chimney stack, and each house has a stone rear wing. These cottages are a slightly altered example of a picturesque type of estate cottages. The interior is not accessible.
