Description
The war memorial at St Paul's Church in Filleigh is a monument that was originally erected in 1900 and later re-dedicated as a First World War memorial. It features a granite cross with an octagonal section shaft and short arms, with the base of the shaft having broach stops. The memorial stands on a three-tier octagonal base, where the two upper tiers have simple cornices and the names of those who died in the Boer War, as well as the First and Second World Wars, are inscribed on the risers of the steps. It was established in memory of Major L. H. D. Fortesque of Castle Hill, who was killed in action during the Boer War, and was re-dedicated after the First World War.
