Description

The Red House Arts Centre is a house built around 1850, which was partly converted into a shop in the late 19th century and is now used as an arts centre. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick and has a slate roof with a brick chimney. The building has an L-shaped plan with a rear left wing and a secondary rear right lean-to.

The exterior features two storeys and a hipped slate roof with deep eaves supported by paired brackets. Originally, the front was symmetrical with three bays, showcasing three 16-pane sash windows on the first floor dating from around 1850. The ground floor has been altered, with a late 19th-century shop front to the left that includes a fascia extending across the front door, along with pilasters at the front door and the left end of the shop window, which is fitted with a 12-pane window. To the right, there is a late 19th-century 2-pane sash window in its original opening.

On the left side, facing Landscore, there is a door on the left and two mid-19th-century 16-pane sashes on the first floor, with evidence of a third window to the right. A similar 16-pane sash window is located on the ground floor, with a blind recess to the right. The left return, facing Western Road, has two blind windows in the left bay and two mid-19th-century 16-pane sashes in the right bay, along with a blind return from the lean-to.

The interior has not been inspected but may contain interesting features. This building is significant as it completes the group around St Lawrence Green and marks the end of the long, relatively straight main street through the town. It is included for its group value.
