Description

The house at 1 Western Road, believed to date from the 1850s but possibly with earlier origins, is built of red brick in Flemish bond, with some slate-hung cob on the rear service wing. The roof is hipped at the west end and pitched elsewhere, covered in slate, with a single stack at the east end of the ridge and deep eaves supported by moulded, paired eaves-brackets. The building has an L-plan, consisting of a two-storey plus basement and attic, three-bay house with a rear service wing. The front (north) elevation is symmetrical, featuring stone steps leading up to a central recessed five-panel door, with glazed upper panels. This door is framed by a doorcase with pilasters, an entablature, and panelled reveals. The windows are 12-pane sashes set within segmental brick arches. There are steps leading down to the basement from the street.

Inside, the house is accessed through a small entrance hall that opens into a hallway flanked by two rooms. The kitchen is located in the rear left service wing. On the ground floor, there is a chamfered cross beam in the eastern room, and timber panelling beneath the front-facing windows. The staircase, located on the west side of the hallway, features a newel stick baluster and a ramped mahogany handrail. The first floor contains four bedrooms, two of which are above the rear service wing and include panelled, built-in cupboards. The basement and attic rooms are open plan, and the basement stair has splat balusters.
