Description

The Chapel of St Lawrence is a chapel with early 13th century origins, which was reportedly left in ruins after a fire in Crediton in 1743. It was used as a cottage for some time until it was thoroughly restored between 1920 and 1921 by Sir Charles Nicholson, with funding provided by Mrs. Drake of Winswood. The chapel is now used infrequently by Queen Elizabeth School. It is constructed from local volcanic trap and sandstone rubble, featuring ashlar dressings and a pantile roof.

The exterior is largely rebuilt in the Early English style and includes plain clasping buttresses. The east end features a triple lancet window with double-chamfered lights and a hoodmould. The west end is similar, with a moulded string at sill level. The north side appears to retain more original wall masonry than the south. The north door has a double-chamfered two-centred doorway with a hoodmould and label stops, flanked by lancet windows with chamfered frames and hoodmoulds that also have label stops. There is a blocked opening below the western lancet. The south side mirrors the north but features three chamfered lancets with hoodmoulds and label stops, and the doorway matches that on the north side.

Inside, the walls are plastered, and the windows have deep internal splays. Most of the interior detail dates from the 1920s, including all fittings. A segmental-headed chamfered recess on the north wall of the chancel contains medieval masonry on the west side, along with a short section of original moulded stone string. The internal splays of the east and west windows also exhibit medieval chamfers and stops.
