Description
No. 4 St Lawrence Green is a house built around 1730. It is constructed from cob and has a cement-rendered and blocked exterior, topped by a steeply-pitched Delabole slate roof. The house features an L-shaped plan, with the main block consisting of two rooms wide and a central entrance leading into a passage. There is a rear left kitchen wing.
The exterior is two storeys high and has an approximately symmetrical three-bay front. The entrance is approximately central and features a recessed oak panelled front door, which dates from the 1920s and was made by Dart and Francis of Crediton, according to the owner. The outer bays have tripartite sash windows on both the ground and first floors, with a 12-pane window in the centre and 4-pane windows in the outer lights. There is also a 12-pane sash window in the centre of the first floor.
Inside, the joinery includes doors with four fielded panels on the first floor and an early 18th-century two-panel door leading to the attic. Most of the chimney-pieces date from the 1920s and 1930s, and there is late 19th-century encaustic tiling in the passage. The balustrade of the 18th-century staircase has been altered but retains a flat moulded handrail. The attic rooms feature doors with what is likely late 19th-century oak graining. The current owner has introduced Georgian-style cupboards. The ground floor front left room and the rear service room both have exposed cross beams. The roof consists of A-frame trusses with pegged lapped collars. This house is an interesting example of early 18th-century architecture in a town that was largely rebuilt after fires in the mid and late 18th century.
