Description

8 and 8B North Street is a house and shop, likely built in the 1830s or 1840s. The building is primarily constructed of Flemish bond brick, which retains its original pointing, with a slate-hung right return and a slate roof. It stands two storeys tall and features deep eaves with a moulded cornice.

The front is asymmetrical with four windows. To the right of the centre, there is a large cartway with a segmental arched head and 20th-century plank doors. Uniquely, this cartway includes a fanlight with geometric glazing bars. On the left side, there is a shop front with a passage door next to it on the right. Both the shop and the door are topped with a continuous fascia and cornice, flanked by plain pilasters. The shop has high transomed windows that angle towards the shop door, featuring moulded frames with two plate glass panes each, and two additional panes on the return, separated by a moulded mullion. The two-leaf shop door has two panes above a low panel, with an overlight that includes margin panes.

To the right, there is a recessed six-panel front door with a deep overlight that also has margin panes. An inserted doorway at the far right has a half-glazed late 19th or early 20th-century door. On the first floor, there are four 16-pane sash windows, with the two on the right being horned replacements. The interior has not been inspected, but it may contain interesting features.
