Description
8A and 8B East Street are two adjoining shops that have been converted into two houses, dating from around the 1840s. The buildings are constructed of Flemish bond brick and feature a slate roof with brick chimney stacks. They were originally designed as mirror image shops with living accommodation above, separated by a central service passage.
The exterior is two storeys high and has a symmetrical front with three windows. There is a continuous fascia across both shopfronts and a central doorway leading to the passage. The left and right sides have pilasters decorated with incised fretwork. The passageway features a well-crafted panelled door, with the top panels fielded and an iron grille above. On either side of the passage are 20th-century replaced doors, which have original deep overlights. The former shop windows have been filled in and now feature 12-pane horned sash windows. The original windows include three 12-pane sashes on the first floor and three 3/6-pane sashes on the second floor. The interior has not been inspected. This building is part of a street predominantly lined with late Georgian and early Victorian houses and shops.
