Description

St Clares is a house dating from the late 18th century, with later alterations. It is constructed of stone, stuccoed and blocked out, and features a slate roof with end stacks that have brick shafts. The building has a double depth main block with a central stair and a later rear right wing.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical four-bay front. There is a slightly recessed 20th-century front door to the left of centre. The ground floor has three 16-pane sash windows, with two right-hand windows being horned replacements, while the left-hand window is an original early 19th-century feature. The first floor contains three 3/6 pane sashes, with the right-hand bay being blind. The rear elevation showcases a round-headed stair window with glazing bars and margin panes. The listing also includes cob garden walls that surround the rear garden.

Inside, original joinery features moulded doorframes and panelled doors, along with a stick baluster stair. The main block has king post and strut roof trusses with pegged joints. A photograph from around the 1950s, seen by the owner, shows the front elevation with a timber doorcase at the front door.
