Description
This is a milestone located in Chawleigh, dating from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. It is made of sandstone and features a narrow, upright, round-headed slab. The slab is inscribed with Roman serif upper and lower case letters as well as Roman numerals. The top of the slab seems to have been taller originally, as the beginning of the inscription is now obscured. A bench-mark has been cut into the stone, making the first word illegible. The visible inscription reads, '....is the Exeter Turnpike XVIIII + ½ MILES FROM EXON'.
