Description
The linhay and stables adjoining the east end of Uppincott Farmhouse are a Grade II listed structure dating from the mid to late 19th century. This building consists of three adjoining ranges surrounding a farmyard. The construction primarily features cob on rubble footings, with the south wall made of brick on rubble. The roof is slate, and the linhay to the south has 6½ bays, while the east has 4½ bays. The north range includes a 6-bay linhay and 5-bay stables, with a hipped end to the roof. All sections are two stories high and face into the courtyard, with half-bays providing passages through the wings.
The linhays are constructed with posts and beams tied into the rear walls, featuring open hay lofts on the first floor and byres with plank gates on the ground level. The stables on the left side of the north range have two double doors and unglazed, two-light windows to the right. There is a loading bay above the right door and another two-light window to the left. The front principals of the roof trusses have been extended to support a pent roof around the courtyard. The back wall of the south range is made of brick on rubble, serving as a garden wall alongside the front of the farmhouse. Many original fittings remain, including pine feeding troughs, making this a well-preserved example of a planned farmyard.
