Description
This building is a barn, stables, and linhays dating from the 17th century, with some repairs from the 19th century. It features partly-plastered cob on rubble footings, with some areas mended using 19th-century brick and rubble. The roof is made of corrugated iron, which replaced the original thatch. The structure is L-shaped, with each section facing a farm courtyard.
The north-facing range includes a pair of stables with two central doorways, unglazed outer windows, and two first-floor loading hatches, along with a three-bay linhay to the left. The east-facing range contains a small barn with large opposing doorways leading to the threshing floor, positioned left of center, and is flanked by linhays—two bays to the left (south) and three bays to the right. The stable roof has a hipped end, while the main range is gable-ended.
All linhays are constructed similarly, following Alcock's Type T1. The full-height timber posts along each open front are large and rest in a birds-mouth fashion on upright stones with vaguely pointed heads. The roofs of the linhays are supported by A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars, some of which may be original from the 17th century. The stables and barn have early or mid-19th-century replacement roofs made up of king post trusses. This building is included for its group value.
