Description
The stone gateway and cob garden walls located to the south-east of Whelmstone Barton date from the early 17th century, while the cob walls were constructed in various periods, including the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The gateway is made of volcanic ashlar, with some of its coping replaced by 20th-century concrete. The walls are either plastered or exposed cob on rubble footings, most featuring pantile copings.
These cob walls enclose an irregularly-shaped front garden, which sometimes incorporates walls from standing agricultural buildings or remnants of demolished ones. On the south-east side, there are remains of a three-seater 19th-century privy. The south-west side features a notably grand early 17th-century stone gateway, built in the same style and period as the porch of the main house. This gateway consists of a large round-headed arch with an ogee-moulded surround and a moulded hood. Above the arch is a niche with a three-centred arch head, a projecting soffit-moulded sill, and a hoodmould. The gabled top has soffit-moulded coping, and a ball finial sits at the apex. The arch is flanked by buttresses, and it currently contains wrought iron gates from around 1950.
