Description

Horwell Barton Farmhouse is a large farmhouse that was formerly a manor house, built around 1840. It is constructed from plastered rubble or cob, with stone rubble stacks topped by 19th and 20th-century brick chimney shafts, some of which are plastered. The farmhouse features a slate roof.

The main block faces south-east and has a double-depth plan, with front and back rooms on either side of a central entrance hall and staircase. The stacks are located in the axial walls between the front and back rooms. There are crosswings on either side that are set back from the front and project slightly to the rear, each containing a later stack on the inner walls. The building is two storeys high and has a symmetrical facade with a 1:3:1 arrangement.

The main block has a projecting three-window front, with a central six-panel front door that includes an overlight, panelled reveals, and a Tuscan porch supported by granite columns and a moulded entablature. The door is flanked by original 20-pane (8/12) sash windows, while the first floor features replacement large-pane sashes. The set-back one-window fronts of the crosswings have original 20-pane sashes on the first floor, but the ground floor sashes have been replaced. The return sides of the main block have blind windows. The corners of the main block and wings are accented with stucco quoins, and there is a plat band running across the front at first floor level. The main roof and crosswings are hipped at each end. The roof currently has plain projecting eaves but is said to have originally featured a parapet.

The interior has not been inspected. Horwell Barton is noted as a former manor house, with a document from 1695 recording the tenant as Anna Davie.
