Description

The linhay and stables, located approximately 5 metres north-west of Uplowman Court Farmhouse, may have origins dating back to the 17th century and were refurbished and partly rebuilt in the late 18th to early 19th century. The building is constructed of stone rubble and has a slate roof. It is designed in an L-shape, with the main block oriented roughly east-west and facing south towards the farmyard. This block is slightly forward of the adjacent cider house to the east and includes a calf house with a hayloft above on the right and a 5-bay linhay on the left. The stable block projects forward at a right angle from the left end and features a 2-bay linhay in the return before the stables, which also have haylofts above.

On the exterior, the calf house has a doorway with an unglazed 19th-century two-light window to the right. The open-fronted linhay is of Alcocks Type T1, featuring full-height posts with tallet/hayloft crossbeams that are tusk-tenoned into them. The posts support the outer principals of late 18th to early 19th-century A-frame trusses. The return face of the linhay section has been partly rebuilt with 20th-century concrete block posts. The stables include two doorways with a hayloft loading hatch above, and the roof is gable-ended. The interior has plain carpentry details, as mostly described above. This linhay and stables are part of a notable group that includes Uplowman Court Farmhouse and the Church of St Peter.
