Description
Court Cottage is a cottage that was formerly two cottages, likely built in the late 18th century to early 19th century. The original two cottages were combined and modernized in the 20th century. The building is constructed of plastered stone rubble, possibly with cob, and features stone rubble stacks topped with 19th-century brick. The roof is thatched, with slate on the rear outshots.
Originally, the cottage consisted of a pair of one-room plan cottages facing southeast. In the 20th century, these were united, and now a central door leads directly to the stair between the two rooms, each having end stacks. The details of the original layout are not entirely clear. The cottage is two storeys high, with 20th-century rear service outshots.
The exterior has a symmetrical two-window front with 19th and 20th-century casements that include glazing bars. The central doorway features a 20th-century door, and the roof is gable-ended. Inside, there is plain carpentry detail where it is exposed, and both fireplaces have plain oak lintels and include ovens. The roof has not been inspected.
This cottage was presumably built as laborers' cottages for the nearby Uplowman Court, to which it still belongs. It is part of an attractive group that includes the court and the Church of St. Peter.
