Description

Uplowman House is a small country mansion dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of plastered stone rubble with stone rubble stacks incorporating brick chimney shafts, and has a slate roof. The house is arranged in a U-shaped plan. The main block faces south and is composed of two rooms, one on either side of a central entrance hall. A stair block projects to the rear, set within the angle of the two main wings. Each of these rooms has a rear lateral stack, with the west stack shared with the adjacent room of the main rear block. The rear room has an end stack, and a lower service block projects to the rear of the right-hand room, featuring a gable-end stack. The main house is three storeys high, with a basement located beneath the western rear block. The front elevation has a symmetrical arrangement of five windows, with the central bay slightly projected. The windows are 12-pane sashes, with further sashes on the west side. The central doorway contains a part-glazed panelled door and a fanlight with glazing bars, all set within a doorcase featuring fluted pilasters and a pedimented head. Plain stucco bands run across the front at the first and second floor levels, and stucco quoins mark the corners of the building. The roof is hipped at each end. The interior, which has not been inspected, is reported to contain a substantial amount of original joinery and detail, including an open string staircase with stick balusters.
