Description

Cott Farmhouse is a building that dates from the mid to late 17th century and was originally a single farmhouse before being divided into two cottages in the late 19th to early 20th century. It is constructed from plastered stone rubble, likely with some cob, and features a stone rubble stack topped with 20th-century brick and a thatched roof.

The overall plan of the building faces south and consists of four rooms. Originally, it had a central lobby plan with smaller unheated outer rooms and larger inner rooms heated by a central axial stack that served back-to-back fireplaces. Since an internal inspection was not possible during the survey, the original layout could not be fully determined. Currently, the house is divided into two cottages, each with a two-room plan on either side of the central stack. The eastern cottage retains the original lobby entrance at the front of the central stack, while the western cottage has an inserted doorway in the outer unheated room.

The exterior features a mostly regular but no longer symmetrical four-window front, with mainly 20th-century casements that include glazing bars. However, the two first-floor windows on the right are likely original, made of oak with flat-faded mullions and containing rectangular panes of old leaded glass. The original central lobby entrance has a 20th-century porch and front doorway, and there is a 20th-century plank door at the left end of the cottage where the inserted doorway is located. The roof is half-hipped at each end. Although the interior was not inspected, it is reported that the original carpentry detail is well-preserved.
