Description
Locks Cottage is likely from the 18th century and was modernised in the mid-19th century. It is a two-room plan cottage built down a steep hillside along a road, facing north-northwest. The cottage is constructed of plastered stone rubble, with some cob, and has a stone rubble stack topped with late 18th- to early 19th-century brick. The roof is gable-ended on the right and continuous with the adjoining Locks Cottage. The plan incorporates a small, unheated room to the east, and a larger, heated room with a gable-end stack to the west. A rear doorway leads into an entrance lobby, with a staircase between the two rooms. The exterior features irregular window placement, a single window on each floor facing the front, and two windows at the rear. All windows are 20th-century casements with glazing bars. A 20th-century door and porch are at the rear. Inside, there is some plain carpentry detail. The larger room contains a large stone rubble fireplace with a soffit-chamfered oak lintel; there are no visible ceiling beams. The roof was not inspected, but the bases of straight principals from A-frame trusses are visible on the first floor. All joinery is 20th-century. Locks Cottage is one of a group of attractive listed buildings in the hamlet of Whitnage and is built onto the end of Locks Cottage. The slope means the ground floor room of Locks Cottage is parallel with the first floor of No. 1.
