Description

The barn west of Court Farm is an 18th-century structure that includes a linhay. It is built of rubble and some cob, with a corrugated iron roof. This long bank barn features an in-line linhay. The left end, which faces the farmhouse (not included in the listing), has a plain wall and a flight of stone steps leading up to a midstrey, where the roof sweeps down over the cheeks. There is a paired plank door with a central wood mullion, and the cheek to the right extends to enclose a lean-to addition that has a square pier at the outer corner. Inside the lean-to, there is a large square door opening and a square window opening.

To the right of the lean-to, there are four open bays supported by three tall round piers made of rubble. The upper level of this section currently lacks a floor and is partially enclosed by horizontal corrugated sheets. The back wall, at the churchyard end, features full-height plank fill and some loose rubble fill, where a return wing once existed. There is a cambered wood lintel over a part-blocked opening, another opening blocked with concrete blocks, and the main opening jambs finished in concrete blocks leading to the upper barn level. The outer end of the barn is hipped, with the top part of the wall made of cob, measuring 500mm.

The barn consists of 11 bays with pegged construction and features an A-frame roof supported by four light purlins. The linhay has five bays and A-frames with cambered collars. There is a large loading opening in the barn wall, with a blocked opening below. The farmhouse and other farm buildings in the area have been rebuilt or are of a later date than this barn range, which retains much of its historic fabric despite some decline in the 20th century.
