Description
Church Cottage and Gnosall Cottage are a pair of cottages, likely built in the late 17th century. They feature rendered or whitewashed rubble with a thatched roof. The interiors have been significantly altered, making them difficult to interpret, but they may have originally had cross-passage plans. Gnosall Cottage includes a wing at the back right.
The cottages are two storeys tall with irregular window arrangements. Church Cottage, on the left, has two 2-light casements from the 20th century, and on the first floor, there are a 2-light and a 3-light casement from the 18th century, both with leading and eyebrow detailing. There is a 20th-century gabled door under a porch supported by wooden arches leading to a thatched hood. A stack is positioned between the windows at the ridge, and the left outer bay may be a later addition. The end is hipped, and the splayed end wall features 3 over 2-light casements, along with a glazed lean-to at the back.
Gnosall Cottage has three 2-light casements on the ground floor and two similar ones on the first floor, all with horizontal bars. There is a 20th-century door and porch located between the first and second windows. The right gable has a stack, and there is an additional stack at the internal angle of the wing, which also has a 20th-century door and some modern additions. The interiors have been much modified; Gnosall Cottage features boxed transverse beams, while Church Cottage retains some early principal rafters in part of a lean-to. One of the cottages was formerly a Post Office, as indicated on the Ordnance Survey map.
