Description

No. 8 St Peter Street is a house dating from the early 18th century, with renovations and alterations made in the 1980s. It has mass wall construction, with the front elevation stuccoed and blocked out, and features a gabled asbestos slate roof with an axial stack that has a brick shaft. The plan consists of one room wide and two rooms deep, with the axial stack serving back-to-back fireplaces in the front and rear rooms. A side passage on the right leads to a lobby entrance and extends down to the garden and river, incorporating a former outhouse as an extension.

The house is two storeys high with an attic and has a lower roofline compared to other houses on St Peter Street. The exterior includes a vertical plank door to the side passage, a 16-pane hornless sash window to the left, and two early 18th-century first-floor 12-pane boxed sash windows with thick glazing bars. There is also a segmental-headed attic dormer with two-light casements, each with six panes.

Inside, the interior is plain, featuring a roof with two tiers of threaded purlins, although the apex was concealed at the time of the survey. This house is a good example of a modestly planned 18th-century town house, preserving two early windows, and it predates many of the larger townhouses in Tiverton that were rebuilt after a series of fires.
