Description

The Memorial Rooms, likely linked to the United Reformed Church (formerly Congregational), were built in 1863, as indicated by a datestone. The structure is made of local grey limestone ashlar and features a slate roof that is gabled at both ends. It has a coursed grey limestone chimney stack with a cornice and three old terracotta pots, reflecting an Early English architectural style.

The building is positioned between No. 2 St Peter Street and the United Reformed Church, creating an appealing 19th-century group. The Memorial Rooms extend forward from No. 2, facing south and presenting an entrance on the south side.

The exterior consists of three storeys with a symmetrical front that has three windows. The front gable is coped, featuring kneelers and a finial. There are deep chamfered string courses at the first and second-floor levels. The ground floor showcases a triple lancet window with three large lights and a continuous hoodmould with label stops. The windows are fitted with horizontal glazing bars. The first floor has a similar triple lancet window, and there is a plaque at the second-floor string course that reads "Memorial Rooms" in Lombardic script. The centre light of the first-floor window is taller and has diamond leaded panes, which may represent the original glazing pattern.

On the left (south) side, the return is blind apart from a 2-centred doorway with a hoodmould. This door features vertical sunk panels and intersecting blind tracery in the tympanum. The rear elevation includes two lancet windows on both the first and second floors, each with chamfered architraves.

The interior has not been inspected but may hold interest.
