Description
This is a lamp standard located on a traffic island at the junction of Angel Hill and St Peter Street in Tiverton, dated 1878 and designed by GS Bridgman. It is made of cast iron and stands on a four-tiered, chamfered stone plinth. The shaft features a Gothic style with two sets of clustered columns topped with enriched capitals. From the upper set, two large foliated scrolls extend to support three lamps, which have been replaced in the late 20th century. The base of the lamp standard is secured with an iron strap and is inscribed with "ERECTED BY J LANE ESQRE JP AD 1878," along with the smaller inscription "GS BRIDGMAN ARCH." John Lane, a local draper and former mayor, contributed to various civic projects, including funding the town hall clock and supporting the construction of a Baptist chapel. This lamp standard is a notable example of its kind and is prominently located in the historic town center.
